SCIENTISTS IN JAPAN SUCCEED IN CREATING STEM CELLS IN A FASTER AND SAFER WAY.

Scientists in Japan showed stem cells can now be made quickly just by dipping blood cells into acid.
Stem cells can transform into any tissue and are already being trialled for healing the eye, heart and brain.

Dr Haruko Obokata:  "It's exciting to think about the new possibilities these findings offer us, not only in regenerative medicine, but cancer as well."

Gene therapy 'could be used to treat blindness' 

Surgeons in Oxford have used a gene therapy technique to improve the vision of six patients who would otherwise have gone blind.

The operation involved inserting a gene into the eye, a treatment that revived light-detecting cells.The doctors involved believe that the treatment could in time be used to treat common forms of blindness.

Prof Robert MacLaren:" I was absolutely delighted at the outcome, we really couldn't have asked for a better result"

Clara Aglen of the Royal National Institute of Blind People: "As this process advances there is hope that it could be transferred across and provide a cure for these common causes of blindness."
